Being a server is stressful but rewarding

I worked at Olive Garden for over two years. I moved and actually like it enough that when I moved back home a year later I came back to work for them again. I loved the atmosphere and coworkers. Management was good but also depends on the individual obviously. I saw opportunity to grow at Olive Garden but dealing with rude customers, I’m sorry “guests”, really tests your patience. I grew a lot and learned a lot from working here though. Everyone should be a server/waiter at some point in their life. Your coworkers become like second family and the tips are amazing some days, really bad other days. You’ll make way more money working dinner shift because at lunch everyone just ordered endless salad and soup for like 7 bucks and has you running back and forth to the kitchen for refills and they leave you a $1-$2 tip because that’s a 15% tip. The training is intensive so I felt well prepared when I started taking my own tables.

Worst place to work the staff are the absolutely terrible they made me feel completely uncomfortable in included and definitely under paid

Staff are incredibly rude at all times and have no respect for people who are new discusting behaviour especially towards me which was not nice to put up with being there trying to get things done

Management Is super unprofessional and selfish

Managers don't really know what they're talking about half the time. They make up rules as they go to benefit them and they treat their employees like they are less than, super unprofessional. They also do not want to pay their employees what they're worth they pick and choose who they give raises to according to how much they like you and if you kiss up to them. There were people that had been with them for 20+ years and the newer workers made more. Ridiculous

Olive Garden was an alright place to work at when I was there. Nice coworkers and there was a steady influx of customers. I enjoyed the discounts on food as well

Okay if you really need money, not okay for mental sanity

Everyone is very friendly and money can be good but not worth what you go through. To Gos are expected to do 100 other jobs simultaneously with their own and are usually forgotten about even though they are responsible for a large chunk of sales. They get scolded about scores and get rewarded with more work when scores are up. Servers have the opportunity to get free meals, breaks, and other perks but To Go’s get absolutely nothing. They get upset if scores decrease but do not realize that they cannot remain high if To Go’s have so many jobs to do at once. Also expect to work way past your scheduled time unexpectedly. It’s understandable if you have to stay 30min-1hr after your shift (sometimes) because it is an unpredictable restaurant… but not 2-3+ hours past it. 6 hour shifts turn into 11 hours. They will have a person work alone when it’s usually busy, but then 6 people scheduled when its usually slow. Then get upset that the alone person can’t handle a rush by themselves. They are overworked and do not get properly paid for it. As a To Go, expect to run around like a chicken without a head. To Go’s also make all of the restaurant’s bread which is not our job whatsoever and an actual Bread Person gets paid more than a To Go Specialist. Some managers are amazing, will help if you need it, and will make you feel excited to work. Others will laugh at your concerns and ignore you. They also are inconsistent on rules and will make some To Go Specialists work harder than others (favoritism). The main reason anyone stays is because it is decent money and you can make good friends -

Stagnant grind

I worked here 13 years ago so probably not relevant. I was still young and green so I started there as a host, pay was minimum wage ($7.25)and don't remember if there was ever an increase. If there was it would have been a quarter or something nonsignificant. There are slow times of boredom and busy times our store would get long wait times and would try to keep our guest happy while they wait. We would also help bus tables, take and prepare togo orders working with a crew of about 3 host. Those days could be stressful like most restaurants no matter the role.I switched over to bussing at a certain point to have minimum wage and get a share of tips. This was very fast paced and dirty work that also included rolling new silverware on busy days or as part of our closing duties. The job wasn't that awful compared to other restaurants I've worked, I've had better and worse jobs in the industry. I remember employees made it fun joking around with each other and we built a friendship after work. But the pay was hard to live on even when living with my dad and going to school. The management was by far the worst bit, we had a weaselly assistant manager who would be fun but hard to trust. Then our general manager who you'd see once or twice a week just kind of slowly wandering around judging people offhandedly making insulting remarks about anyone randomly.

Fast Paced, Nice People

I loved the entire staff. It was really just the pace of it that stressed me out. The unlimited soup & salad required servers to constantly check on those tables and bring them refills of soup, salad, breadsticks, and of course drinks.. It was hard to balance with other tables and give the other tables the attention they deserved.

Fun great work environment

I absolutely love working here at OG! Been here going on 5 years. My general manager is the best person I have ever worked for in my 20 years of working.

Fun and productive

Great place to work . Pay opportunity. They live for you to grow and stay with the company. They also help its employees in hard times. If you love working for people you will love working here

Managers were awesome but not a good place to work

My manager was awesome but working there wasn't. No work life balance, and always short staffed. Customers weren't it either. 10/10 wouldn't recommend

the managers will give you a hard time and will find a way to blame you. They are extremely rude and unprofessional. These managers are the worst i have ever seen. Work is fun with the servers but it can get hard especially when it’s packed. You are not allowed to call off whatsoever and they will not care if it’s a family emergency or a personal thing.

Good Enviroment

Everyone is nice and you meet new people everyday. A good beginner job and perfect if you like interacting with people and talking. A little stressful during rush hours, but overall a good job.

Management sucks

Pay was not worth the actual amount of work you would do during a shift. Don’t underestimate it! They had me vacuuming the entire restaurant and wiping down restrooms at 9 am when we opened at 11. Customers were rude and didn’t understand you were just trying to do your job. Management failed to talk to us like we were humans and not just their little robot worker bees so I left.

Not easy to move up the employment chain

It’s difficult to do your job when everything you say to management is not taken seriously. Most of the managers were awesome except a few, with that being said not a bad place to work just hard to not be taken seriously at all.

Well organized

It was a great work environment, I worked there out of high school. They take the time to train you and make sure you have a full grasp on the job. Highly reccomend

Meh

Low tips, lots of side work. Never ending everything has you running around like a chicken with your head cut off for $2. If you can serve her, you can serve anywhere

Managers were not professional but people could be fin

Olive Garden only allows 3 tables per person this means when you’re slow you may only get 1 table in 6 hours this has happened many times. They do not let their employees express themselves I changed something about my appearance and was not allowed on the schedule or to finish my schedule until it was fixed. Olive Garden also believes the customer is always right and will write you up if “you did something wrong” they pushed all the good managers out :(

I like the Olive Garden for great food. I went to Texas, CA and New York for Olive the last 30 + years for family and working. I can work for 18 hours any day. I can work in the kitchen, cook food and cleaning plates.

Horrible Management

Nothing is ever clean or where it is supposed to be, managers play favorites, super stressful because of the reasons listed above. You will absolutely got sick of the endless free refills.

It's a nice experience sometimes like all jobs

I work in a small OG so short handed happens, managers are alright sometimes I wish they'd listen more but it is what it is. You do alot of semi heavy lifting with trays full of food and sometimes drinks too, occasionally helping out with food running and others jobs around the kitchen but you dont have to that's just me I can't sit still knowing someone needs help. Alot of tables you get won't care for your name or who you are, to them your just the servant and you basically gotta do anything for them. But there are good people out there and it just makes your day. Scheduling is flexible, you can post shifts and pick up shifts. If you have to leave for awhile you can also transfer to other olive gardens for work wherever you at but that depends on the managers. Requesting off is pretty easy if you need more than a few days, the managers are pretty nice about it as long as it's something legitimate. It's a lot of walking back and forth and speed walking back and forth so you'll get knee pain, your feet hurting or your lower back, you could always put a knee brace on, it helps a bit. It's a good place to work and start out, money is decent sometimes but it's good

Flexible and Fun

Olive Garden was a great job during college. They are super flexible with scheduling and it's easy to pick up a shift or get one covered most of the time. Working in a restaurant is a great place to meet people, met a lot of fun coworkers here!
